Focus on the users, not just the buyers

The Enterprise software industry is broken in many areas. And one of them is the approach the software industry has taken. All evidence seems to indicate that the software industry gets its requirements from decision makers, not users.

Jeff Nolan illustrates this very well in this post on Microsoft’s Outlook. I have seen the same approach taken by other vendors as well.My lastest work involved assessing the usage of Business Intelligence (BI) and my observations were no different from that of Jeff.

If the enterprise software industry has to grow, a change in approach is called for — right from product developers to sales people.
