"We believe in the concept that life is about overreaching oneself to deliver – and in a consumer business overreach to deliver value" — so says R Subramaniam of Subiksha– India’s largest retail chain. His entire interview and his responses can be seen here.
I have had the chance to visit a couple of his stores a year back. What I found was generally encouraging because I could see a lot of enthusiasm, though the store was generally unclean. They still have a long way to go to close the gap between them and the West. Hence, his confident assertion notwithstanding (see the last line in the interview), it would pay to learn some lessons from the West. We should not be so insular and arrogant. And the sooner Subiksha learns about customer service, and has a better IT infrastructure to manage their operations, the better.
Speaking about the interview itself, I liked the fine balance between humility and hunger for growth, between talking about achievements and acknowledging the shortcomings.
My own assessment is that Subiksha may get acquired as the retail fever kicks off in India. I guess it is good for RS. And that’s what he is perhaps shooting for!
